OSRS Ironman Slayer guide

Slayer is the skill most Ironmen spend the most hours on, and for good reason. Tasks hand you weapons, armour, herbs, seeds and alchables that you cannot buy anywhere else.

This guide covers which master to use at each stage, how to spend your points, what to block and skip, and which drops matter. The live tables come from our own compiled Slayer data.

Updated 1 October 2026. Facts checked against the game.

Why Slayer is the Ironman core loop

A normal account trains Slayer for profit. An Ironman trains it because so much of the account comes from it. The abyssal whip, the trident of the seas, the occult necklace, dragon boots and the granite maul are all Slayer drops.

The quieter rewards matter just as much. Many Slayer monsters roll the herb drop table or the rare seed table, so a long task often ends with a stack of grimy herbs and ranarr or snapdragon seeds. Those feed your Herblore and your herb runs, which feed your next task.

  • Herbs for potions

Abyssal demons, dust devils and kurask all roll the herb table. Bank them for prayer and combat potions.

  • Seeds for your patches

Nechryael and kurask roll the rare seed table, a steady source of herb and tree seeds.

Which master to use and when

Points only start after your first four tasks, and Turael and Spria never give points. After that, every 10th task gives five times a master's normal points and every 50th gives fifteen times. Use the best master you can for those milestone tasks.

Turael skipping means swapping a task you do not want for one of Turael's easy ones. It costs no points, but it resets your task streak to zero, so it is a tool for chasing one task, not for normal play.

  • Vannaka

Edgeville Dungeon. The early workhorse once you have some combat stats.

    Needs: 40 combat

  • Chaeldar

Zanaris. Better points and a stronger list for mid-level accounts.

Needs: 70 combat · Lost City

  • Konar quo Maten

Mount Karuulm. Every task names a location, which is slower, but she gives more points than Duradel and her tasks can drop brimstone keys. She is also the classic route to hydra tasks.

    Needs: 75 combat

  • Nieve or Steve

Tree Gnome Stronghold, next to the Stronghold Slayer Cave. A good list for accounts not yet at 100 combat.

    Needs: 85 combat

  • Duradel

Shilo Village. The standard high-level master for most of an Ironman's Slayer career.

    Needs: 100 combat · 50 Slayer · Shilo Village

  • Mortimer

Wyrmscraig Cavern, added in July 2026. He only assigns monsters with superior variants and lets you pick from two tasks, three after 50 tasks with him. He gives no base points; instead each task can carry a modifier for points, quantity, XP, clues or superior drops. His tasks cannot be Turael-skipped, a skip costs 100 points, and he has only two block slots.

Needs: 100 combat · 70 Slayer · part of Fallen From Grace

Slayer point unlock order

Points are scarce early, so buy the unlocks that save time on every task first. Leave cosmetics until much later.

  1. 1.

    Malevolent Masquerade

Lets you assemble the Slayer helmet at 55 Crafting. The first big buy for most accounts once you have a black mask.

    Needs: 400 points

  2. 2.

    Gargoyle Smasher

Finishes gargoyles for you while you carry a rock hammer. Gargoyles are a common task and drop the granite maul.

    Needs: 120 points

  3. 3.

    Bigger and Badder

Lets superior monsters spawn on task. Superiors give big XP and can drop the imbued heart and eternal gem. Cheap for what it does.

    Needs: 50 points

  4. 4.

    Key extends

Abyssal demons, dust devils, gargoyles, nechryael, bloodveld and cave kraken are worth extending. Most cost 100 points; Bleed Me Dry is 75.

    Needs: 75-100 points each

  5. 5.

    Rune pouch

Holds three rune types. Only one per account, and it frees inventory space for every magic task and boss.

    Needs: 750 points

  6. 6.

    Herb sack

Holds 30 of each grimy herb. It also costs 250 points at the Tithe Farm, so many Ironmen buy it there and save Slayer points.

    Needs: 750 points · 58 Herblore

  7. 7.

Broader Fletching (300) for broad bolts, Ring Bling (150) for Slayer rings, Like a Boss (200) for boss tasks, and Task Storage (500).

What to block, skip and extend

Each master keeps their own block list. You get one block slot per 50 quest points, so six at 300, plus a seventh for the elite Lumbridge & Draynor diary. Blocking with Nieve costs 90 points and with Duradel 100. A plain skip costs 30 points with the usual masters.

Block tasks that you will get often and never want. Skip tasks that are rare or only bad for now. Extend tasks that drop things you need, since longer tasks mean more drops and fewer trips back to the master.

The table is our own reading of the task weights, so treat it as a starting point. An Ironman still chasing dragon boots should not block spiritual creatures yet, and an account that needs a black mask should keep cave horrors.

Block it

  • Warped creatures (weight 6)
  • Spiritual creatures (weight 6)
  • Fossil Island wyverns (weight 5)
  • Skeletal wyverns (weight 5)

Skip it

  • Suqahs (weight 8)
  • Red dragons (weight 5)
  • Ankou (weight 5)
  • Blue dragons (weight 4)
  • Scabarites (weight 4)
  • Brine rats (weight 3)
  • Turoth (weight 3)
  • Mutated zygomites (weight 2)
  • Waterfiends (weight 2)

Do it, and extend it

  • Metal dragons (weight 12)
  • Abyssal demons (weight 9)
  • Black demons (weight 9)
  • Bloodveld (weight 9)
  • Araxytes (weight 8)
  • Nechryael (weight 7)
  • Cave kraken (weight 6)
  • Gargoyles (weight 6)
  • Aberrant spectres (weight 6)
  • Dust devils (weight 6)
  • Dark beasts (weight 5)

For Duradel and Nieve. Weights show how often a task comes up; blocking the heaviest bad tasks saves the most time. Full lists per master are on the Slayer pages.

Slayer drops that matter for an Ironman

  • Abyssal whip

From abyssal demons. Your main melee weapon for a long stretch.

    Needs: 85 Slayer · 70 Attack

  • Trident of the seas

A task-only drop from cave kraken or the Kraken boss. The Ironman's first strong magic weapon.

    Needs: 87 Slayer · 75 Magic

  • Occult necklace

From smoke devils and the Thermonuclear smoke devil. Adds 5% magic damage.

    Needs: 93 Slayer · 70 Magic

  • Dragon boots

From spiritual mages. The melee boots you will wear until primordials.

    Needs: 83 Slayer · 60 Defence

  • Granite maul

From gargoyles in the Slayer Tower. A cheap special attack weapon.

Needs: 75 Slayer · 50 Attack and Strength

  • Herbs and seeds

A steady supply from herb and seed tables on many tasks. Carry a herb sack and a seed box to keep them out of your inventory.

Cannon, Slayer helmet and Hardcore notes

  • Dwarf multicannon

Speeds up tasks where many monsters stand close together, where the area allows a cannon. It needs a steady supply of cannonballs, which an Ironman has to smith.

    Needs: Dwarf Cannon

  • Cannonball supply

Plan your Smithing around it before you lean on the cannon.

  • Slayer helmet

Combines the black mask, nose peg, earmuffs, facemask, spiny helmet and enchanted gem. It gives 16.67% melee accuracy and damage on task; imbue it for the ranged and magic bonus.

    Needs: 400 points · 55 Crafting

  • Black mask

A rare drop from cave horrors. Get it before you buy Malevolent Masquerade.

Needs: 58 Slayer · Cabin Fever

  • Krystilia and Hardcores

Krystilia gives Wilderness-only tasks and the most points, 25 a task once you reach five in a row. Kills must happen inside the Wilderness, where other players can attack you. A Hardcore Ironman risks their status on every task, so most should leave her alone.

    Needs: Slayer 2+

Questions

What is the best Slayer master for an Ironman?
Duradel once you have 100 combat and 50 Slayer. Before that, Nieve from 85 combat. Konar gives more points but each task is tied to a location.
What should I buy first with Slayer points?
Most Ironmen buy Malevolent Masquerade for the Slayer helmet, then Gargoyle Smasher and Bigger and Badder, then extends for demons and dust devils. Get the herb sack from the Tithe Farm instead if you can.
How many Slayer block slots do you get?
One for every 50 quest points, up to six at 300, plus one more for the elite Lumbridge & Draynor diary. Mortimer has his own list with only two slots.
Is Turael skipping worth it?
Only when you want a specific task. It resets your task streak, so you lose the bonus points on your next 10th and 50th tasks.
Should a Hardcore Ironman do Wilderness Slayer?
Usually not. Krystilia's tasks must be done in the Wilderness, and a death to another player ends Hardcore status.
