How to get herbs as an Ironman

Herblore is the slowest skill for most Ironmen because every herb is grown or earned. Herb runs give the most herbs for your time, so build your routine around them.

The extras still matter. Miscellania, herbiboar and minigames each add a trickle. The farming timers at /tools/farming tell you when each patch is ready.

Early game

  • Your first herb runs

There are 10 herb patches. Start with Falador, Catherby, Ardougne, Port Phasmatys and Hosidius, then add more as you unlock them. Herbs take about 80 minutes to grow.

  • Wintertodt

The reward cart has a herb roll, and a higher Herblore level gives better herbs.

    Needs: 50 Firemaking

  • Kingdom of Miscellania

With 10 workers on herbs, Royal Trouble done and 750,000 coins in the coffers, you get about 61 grimy herbs a day, from tarromin up to dwarf weed.

Needs: Throne of Miscellania · Royal Trouble

Mid game

  • Magic secateurs

Give 10% more yield on herb patches when worn or carried. Get them as early as you can.

Needs: Fairytale I - Growing Pains

  • Ultracompost

Cuts disease chance by 90% and lifts the minimum harvest to 6 herbs. Add volcanic ash to supercompost, or cast Fertile Soil with ash after reading the ash covered tome.

  • Disease-free patches

Troll Stronghold, Weiss, Hosidius (easy Kourend & Kebos diary) and Harmony Island (elite Morytania diary) never get diseased.

Needs: My Arm's Big Adventure · Making Friends with My Arm

  • Herbiboar

Track it across Fossil Island for 1 to 3 herbs per catch, plus 1 more with magic secateurs. Good Hunter XP too, but fewer herbs per hour than a herb run.

    Needs: 80 Hunter · 31 Herblore · Bone Voyage

Late game

  • Yield bonuses

Kandarin diaries add up to 15% yield at Catherby. The hard Kourend & Kebos diary adds 5% at Hosidius and the Farming Guild, and a Farming cape adds 5% everywhere.

  • Attas plant

Hespori drops anima seeds. An attas plant gives a 5% better chance to save harvest lives on all herb patches.

    Needs: 65 Farming

Questions

How many herbs do you get per patch?
With ultracompost, magic secateurs and a high Farming level, about 8.6 herbs on average.
Which herbs should an Ironman plant?
Ranarr for prayer potions, snapdragon for super restores and toadflax for Saradomin brews. Plant what your next potions need.
Is herbiboar worth it for herbs?
As a Hunter method with herbs on the side, yes. As a pure herb source, herb runs give far more for your time.
