How to get potion secondaries as an Ironman

Secondaries are the other half of Herblore. You can have a bank full of herbs and still be stuck because you lack snape grass or red spiders' eggs.

Most secondaries can be bought, farmed or picked up from spawns. Plan them with your herb runs so they never hold you back.

Checked against the game on 29 September 2026.

Early game

  • Eye of newt

Jatix in Taverley stocks 800 plus eye of newt packs. Buy plenty for attack and super attack potions.

  • Limpwurt roots

Farm them from 26 Farming, or take them from hill giants and hobgoblins.

  • Red spiders' eggs

Spawns in the Varrock Sewers, Forthos Dungeon, Karamja Dungeon and the Pandemonium cave. Needed for restores and super restores.

  • Snape grass

Spawns on Waterbirth Island, near Hosidius and on Hobgoblin Peninsula. Farm it in allotments from 61 Farming for prayer potions.

Mid game

  • Mort myre fungus

Cast Bloom near rotting logs in Mort Myre Swamp with the blessed silver sickle. Used in super energy potions.

    Needs: Nature Spirit

  • Potato cactus

Grow it in a cactus patch for magic potions.

    Needs: 64 Farming

  • Crushed nests

Bird houses on Fossil Island give empty nests. Crush them with a pestle and mortar for Saradomin brews.

    Needs: Bone Voyage

  • Hardcore note

Wine of Zamorak also spawns in the level 38 Wilderness church. Collect it at the Chaos Temple in Asgarnia instead, which is outside the Wilderness.

Late game

  • Zulrah's scales

Drop from Zulrah, or dissect sacred eels for 3 to 9 scales each. At 90 Fishing and Cooking that is about 1,200 scales an hour.

    Needs: Partial Regicide · 87 Fishing · 72 Cooking

  • Mastering Mixology

Turns herbs into pastes and potions with no secondaries. A good use for low herbs you have no secondaries for.

Needs: 60 Herblore · Children of the Sun
