Ironman verdict

Air rune is a free-to-play item. Other players trade it, but an Ironman cannot use the Grand Exchange or trade, so you get your own. We list 9 monsters, 6 shops, 3 recipes and 8 other sources for it.

The easiest way is to buy it: the cheapest of the shops that stock it is Aubury's Rune Shop in Varrock, at 4 coins each. You can also make it with 1 Runecraft from Rune essence at an air altar. Each one made gives 5 Runecraft XP. That is the lowest-level of its 3 recipes. If you would rather kill for it, the lowest-level monster that drops it is Wizard (level 9), at 2/128, about one in 64 kills. The best rate is from Air wizard (level 13): 19/20, 5–10 at a time. The 9 monsters we list with a combat level range from level 9 to 301. It also comes from 8 other sources, such as Crystal chest and Essence impling. It is on the easy and medium clue scroll reward tables, so every clue of those tiers you complete is a chance at it.

Bosses we cover that drop it: King Black Dragon and Thermonuclear Smoke Devil. Shops stock it in 5 places, including Varrock, Port Sarim, Wizards' Guild and Lunar Isle.

It is a material in 30 recipes, for example Air battlestaff, Enchanted emerald sickle (b) and Opal bolts (e) (4 Magic). High Alchemy (55 Magic) turns one into 2 coins. Each cast uses a nature rune, 180 coins from a rune shop, and five fire runes that a fire staff replaces, so an alch loses about 178 coins; only alch it to clear space.
